Get started by creating an account on Bidspot. Creating an account is free. Once you create an account on Bidspot all you need to do going forward to bid is to register for the online auction you are interested in. Here's the two step process of signing up for Bidspot and registering for an auction.

Getting started with Bidspot

Step #1 - Join by creating an account.

Go to Bidspot.com and in the top right corner, click register.

Fill out your information on the registration form, and click register now.

You will receive an email confirmation that you registered.

Step #2 - Register for an auction

To bid, you first need to register for an auction.

Visit Bidspot.com and click on the auction you would like to bid in.

Click the green register to bid button, you will be directed to the login screen if you are not already logged in.

Enter your email address and password you just created when signing up for Bidspot and login. You will be directed to the auction registration page.

Fill out your information and submit.

Next, agree to the terms and conditions of the auction and confirm.

You will receive an email that says either your registration is pending or it is approved.

If you receive an email that says your registration is pending, the auction house is reviewing your registration and you will receive an approved email shortly.

You will be directed back to the catalogue page where you can place bids once approved.

We believe in building a trusted platform for both buyers and sellers. As part of this, we require credit card information upon registration for an auction. Please note the information is for verification purposes only, and your credit card will not be charged.

Why do I need to register to create an account?

Your registration provides us with your contact information, including the email address to send you an online bid confirmation.

Creating an account on Bidspot is free and easy. Once you are registered on Bidspot you can create watch lists, alerts, check on items you have won or are bidding on, and other actions in your account, making it personal and easy to navigate. Here's an introduction to your account.

An Introduction to Your “My Bidspot” Account

Once you are registered on Bidspot, you can create watchlist, alerts, check on items you have won or bidding on and other actions in your account. Making it personal and easy to navigate.

First, login to your account in the top right corner. Once you are logged in, you will see tabs at the top.

Click the tab of information you would like to see. You can view all items at once, only items won, items not won, or what you are currently bidding at. You can also view a watchlist you create.

To easily save items you’re interested in but have not yet placed a bid on, you can add them to your watchlist.

Go to any catalogue page and click add to watchlist on items you would like to watch, then click the watch button.

A pop-up will show confirming the item has been added to your watchlist.

The item will now show on your My Bidspot watchlist tab.

Next to your watchlist tab is My Alerts. You can create alerts on Bidspot to receive notification of an item list that you are interested in.

To create an alert, go to your My Alerts tab. Name your search, for example, if you would like to be notified of one of Alliance Construction auctions, name your search Alliance Construction or whatever you will easily recognise.

Next, type in keywords or search terms and separate each word or phrase with a comma. Click the Save Alert button.

Your saved search will now show up on the top. Icons will appear indicating what is being done with your search. The envelope indicates you will receive an email alert if any items listed are relevant to that search. If you do not wish to receive email notifications on that alert, you can click the envelope to remove email.

If you click on the magnifying glass, the site will indicate your search which will land you on the results page where you can sort and add to your watch list.

If you would like to delete any alerts you’ve set up, just click the delete icon.

Finally, you can also view invoices and update any profile information at any time in your My Bidspot account.

How do I subscribe/unsubscribe to emails from Bidspot?

My Alerts are a convenient way to receive automatic email notifications when items matching your interest are added to the Bidspot website by partner auction houses. You can add a keyword, a title search, refine by category or even inclusion in live or online auctions.

You can create alerts on Bidspot to receive notification via email or within your account of when items list that your are interested in. Here's how to set up alerts.

Setting Alerts on Bidspot

To create an alert, go to your My Alerts tab. Name your search, for example, if you would like to be notified of one of Alliance Construction auctions, name your search Alliance Construction or whatever you will easily recognise.

Next, type in keywords or search terms and separate each word or phrase with a comma. Click the Save Alert button.

Absentee Bid

A method of bidding for those who cannot or do not wish to attend an auction. Absentee bids are also called "left" or "order" bids. An absentee bid may be placed before an auction begins. View the short video below on how to leave an absentee bid.

Asking Price (a.k.a. Bid Price)

When a bidder places a bid, the auctioneer asks the other bidders if any of them will pay a specific amount above the current bid – the ask price. Bid Increment: The amount by which the auctioneer increases the bidding. In general, the auctioneer will request bids of about 10% higher than the previous bid. For instance, if the bidding opens at $5,000, subsequent bids of $5,500, $6,000, $6,500, etc. would follow. The auctioneer can vary at his/her discretion.

Bidder Number

Every registered bidder receives a unique bidder number when they register for a given auction. If you are the highest bidder - the lot number, the final bid price and your bidder number goes into the auctioneer’s book and a back-up set of records known as clerking sheets to verify your purchase. Bought-In (a.k.a. Passed)

If there are no bids on a lot, or if bidding does not reach the lowest possible selling price, the lot in "bought in", meaning it is unsold and remains the property of the owner.

Buyer

The person who placed the highest bid on an item becomes the buyer, or new owner of that item when his/her bid is accepted by the auctioneer.

Buyer’s Premium

The percentage above the hammer price paid by the buyer to the auction house that is part of the total purchase price.

Clerk

A person employed by an auction house to record for each lot sold, the lot number, the final bid price and the bidding number of the high bidder.

Competing Bids

Before and during a sale, an auction house accepts competing bids for a lot from absentee bidders, phone bidders, online and in room bidders if all of these bidding methods are available.

Condition Report

A written description of the imperfections of an object (or lack thereof), particularly of characteristics that might affect value. This is essential information for prospective bidders.

Consignor(a.k.a. Seller)

The owner who is authorizing the auction house to act as agent on his or her behalf for sale.

Consignor Agreement

The contract between the auction house and consignor.

Fair Warning

When an auctioneer announces "fair warning", he/she is saying, "Bid now or I am closing the lot. This is your last chance." If there are no bids forthcoming, the auctioneer’s hammer falls and the sale is complete for that lot.

Final Selling Price

Hammer Price/High Bid + Buyer’s Premium

Hammer Price

The highest bid accepted/the winning bid for a lot at auction/the price at which the auctioneer’s “hammer” falls. Note that this does not include the buyer’s premium.

Live Auction

A live auction is hosted by an auctioneer in real time, typically at the gallery or salesroom of the auctioneer, and is held before an audience of bidders. Bidspot is a service that allows a bidder to remotely participate in a live gallery auction via the internet. Other bidders might participate -- in person, by phone or through an absentee bid sent in prior to the auction. Bidspot participants place their bids via a computer, bidding in response to bids placed by others. Your bids are automatically received by a remote clerk, who places your bid in real time. Bidding will continue (usually at defined increments) until competition for the lot ends. If the highest bid offered meets the minimum price designated by the seller as acceptable, the lot is sold. Lot

An individual object or group of objects offered for sale at auction as a unit.

Lot Number

Every lot in an auction is given a unique lot number. The lots are sold in numerical order.

Online Bidding

The option of bidding on Bidspot in advance of an auction or in real time during an auction through a computer or mobile device.

Preview (a.k.a. Exhibition)

Every lot goes on public display in the days before an auction, whether at the auction house or online or both. Specialists are available to answer all questions. Auction house previews are typically free and open to the public.

Reserve Price

The reserve price is the lowest price which a seller is willing to accept for his or her property. At many auction houses, reserves must be set at or below the low estimate, and if bidding ends before the reserve is reached, the property will not be sold. An auction house may disclose the reserve; mark items which have reserves or keep the reserve confidential for the seller. Most auction houses keep the reserve confidential for the seller.

Results

Soon after every auction, the selling prices, known as the results, are posted online. Customarily, the results include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, as this is the full amount the buyer has agreed to pay.

Seller’s Commission

The commission paid by an owner to the auction house for acting as the owner’s agent in the sale of his property. The auction house deducts the seller’s commission (and any agreed upon expenses) from the hammer price and send the rest to the owner.

Starting Price

The starting price is the lowest price at which a lot can sell (unless a reserve price is specified).

Timed Online Only Auction

A timed online only auction is automated and takes place solely online. The bidding for each lot is opened at a predetermined level set by the auctioneer, usually at a set time and stays open over an extended period of hours or days. During this period of open bidding one will be able to see the current high bid on each lot. You may place a higher bid at a defined bidding increment you choose. How to Live Bid on Bidspot

All live auctions will have a wifi symbol next to them. This means the auctioneer will start the auction on a specific date and time and auction one lot after another lot. Once you click on the sale, you’ll arrive at the live bidding page.

The current lot up per sale will appear. If you wish to bid at the price that is listed, click the green button.

Once you place your bid, the button will turn gray, indicating you’ve submitted your bid. Once your bid has been accepted you will see the button change to say you are the high bidder. If someone outbids you, the button will change to green again indicating you’re able to place another bid. The information under the bid button will update real-time and chose all of the bidding activity. Your bidder number is displayed at the top right of the page.

If you scroll down on the page you will see which lots are up next. Once bidding ends on a lot, the lot will close and the screen will change to the next lot where bidding will start again. The process will continue lot by lot until the auctioneer reaches the end of the sale.

You will receive an email notification if you are high bidder and won any lot. Immediately you can also visit your account section on My Bidspot which has an items won tab.

How do I leave an absentee bid?

If you will not be around during the time of the auction to bid live, you can conveniently leave an absentee bid. Enter the highest value you wish to bid. Bidspot will bid on your behalf during the live auction until your indicated value.

How to Leave an Absentee Bid on Bidspot

If you will not be around during the sale to bid live, you can always leave an absentee bid.

To leave an absentee bid, first register for the auction.

Once you are registered, go to the item you wish to bid on. If you're not already logged in to Bidspot, please log in.

You can leave your bid on the catalogue bid, or click on the item to view more detail and bid. Enter the bid you would like to leave and click the place bid button. You will be directed to the screen to confirm your bid.

Once you click confirm, a pop-up will show indicating you have successfully placed your bid.

You will also receive an email, that your absentee bid is confirmed. If you wish to change your absentee bid, revisit the logged detail page, enter the bid you would like to make and click the change bid button.

Since you are leaving an absentee bid, your bid will be executed live during the sale.

The Bidspot system will make the bid on your behalf when the lot is up. The system will bid up the item to your absentee bid.

For example, if you place an absentee bid for $100 which is the most you wish to pay, the auctioneer will open the lot at the starting bid. Say the bidding opens at $20, the system will bid $20 for you, and if someone bids on live $30, the system will bid you $40 and so on.

If you are the high bidder at $40 you will win the item at that price. You can win the item for up to $100, your absentee bid. If the bidding goes past $100 then you would not win. If you are the high bidder, you will receive an email after the auction communicating you have won the item as well as payment and shipping instructions.

If you received an email indicating your credit card verification has failed when you attempted to register for a sale, it may be that the information you have listed in your profile has expired or changed.

You can update this information by logging in to your Bidspot account. Click the "My Bidspot" link at the top right of the home page on Bidspot. Next, click on the tab “Profile”. Upon doing so, you should see your credit card info listed in the right column. Click on the pencil icon to edit your credit card info. Be sure to verify and fill in all fields and confirm that your billing address information is also complete and correct. Finally, you may save all changes made at the bottom of the page to update your information.

How Does an Auction Work?

All auctions start with your trustee auctioneer. The auctioneer opens each lot and accepts bids before and closing and selling a lot with the highest bidder.

One way to bid at an auction is live, in the auction room with the auctioneer.

A second way to bid is phone bidding. A bidder makes arrangements with an auction house prior to the sale to bid with them over the phone live during the auction.

The third way to bid is online bidding, which is where Bidspot fits in. You can bid at your convenience on your computer or any mobile device and your bids are submitted during the live auction.

You can also leave absentee bids on Bidspot prior to the sale.

Live Auctions

A live auction is hosted by an auctioneer in real time, on location at the saleroom of an auctioneer before a live audience of bidders. Bidspot allows any bidder to remotely participate in a live auction by proxy via the internet. In this setting other bidders are also participating in person, over the phone, or via absentee bid sent prior to the auction event. Bidspot bidders place their bids via phone or computer, and can bid in real time response to active bidding activity. The bids placed through Bidspot are automatically received by a remote clerk which enters the live bid. The bidding continues, typically at defined increments, until competition no longer persists. If the highest offered bid meets the acceptable minimum price designated by the seller, the lot is sold. Then the auctioneer will move on to the next lot, and the process repeats for each item in the auction catalog.

Online Auctions

Online only auctions are online auctions automated for a given amount of time.
The bidding for each lot in the event opens at a predetermined time set by the auctioneer and endures over a period of hours or days. This period is used for open bidding, and those participating will see the most current highest bid on each lot. Bidders can enter higher bids at the predetermined bidding increment. The identity of the bidder is kept confidential during the auction. During a online only auction bidders will be automatically informed via email if they are the highest bidder, or if they have been outbid by a competitor. At the end of the defined auction period, if the highest offered bid meets the acceptable minimum price designated by the seller, the lot is sold.

Bidding opportunities on lots in a online only sale will begin to close at a specified time, where the lots close at regular intervals until the auction has ended. Some online auctions will permit an extended bidding period. In this case, if a bid is not placed on a lot within the specified time before closing, the bidding may be automatically extended for a set period of time. Length of the extended bidding period is also predetermined by the auctioneer prior to the event’s start.

How do I retract a bid?

To cancel/retract your bid in a live auction only, simply update your bid amount by submitting "0" as your bid amount. You will then see a popup and be prompted to confirm the change of your bid to "0" which will remove your bid. Once you click "Ok" to confirm, your bid should be successfully retracted.

In a Online Auction, you will only be able to lower your bid amount to the next highest bid increment but not remove it completely if there are other existing bidders bidding on the same lot. This allows you to be outbid should an underbidder bid the next increment. You may however contact the auction house or Bidspot directly to request that the bid be removed completely.

If you would like to place a new bid on the same item after retracting/canceling your bid - you may do so.
